I decided to get rid of them because I've just gone off the ads. They weren't making any money, but were handy as a hit counter - but then again, that's what Google Analytics is for :) I might go back to ads one day. I don't know why you needed to get rid of adsense though. There is a widget which adds your adsense in your posts rather than on sidebars if you prefer that. I wrote about it on my blog.
