I read RSS feeds on my Nokia e61 phone. It’s kind of wierd, but if I’m awake early or have a few minutes at lunchtime then I can catch up on my favourite blogs.
I’ve come across a couple of blogs (no names, but some quite famous) that use the WordPress Mobile Edition template. Some of them have some wierd behaviour, including:
- posts that are just listed with a link that goes nowhere (i.e. no content available),
- posts that don’t have a link to allow subscription to the author’s RSS feed (important if you come across the blog through a link), and
- whole blogs that don’t allow the template to be exited such that the above can take place.
I posted a message on the above to the BUMPzee Australian Blogs forum - and with a little more hunting around, came to the conclusion that it was the template version that was to blame. The followup post was this:
…ok, the answer to the WordPress Mobile Edition issue for most bloggers is going to be just to upgrade to release 2.0 of the plugin - available from alexking.org/projects/wordpress
I checked it out on portablogger.com and it works fine (well, fine enough - it allows for exit from the Mobile Edition template so that the reader can subscribe). I’m going to tune it a little prior to adding the template to my more popular blogs.
The offer for a “mobile health check” is still there if anyone would like to take me up on it.
So… the trick is to upgrade to the latest version of the template - this will at least allow readers to jump out to the normal template (and then subscribe to the blog’s RSS feed).
Anyone using it?
