Building community with blogs: the start of a case study

We know that community is sexy, and that participating in communities like BUMPzee helps your blog grow.

In short: communities are good for building your blog.

What about the reverse? Are blogs good for building communities?

I’m going to find out. I am part of a group of information architects who meet once a month and chat and share a glass of wine - ironically, the Canberra IA Cocktail Hour goes for an hour and a half, and we don’t drink cocktails :) We do talk IA, and we do meet in Canberra, so the title is at least partially correct. Regular members who blog include Donna Maurer, Steve Collins, Matt Hodgson and my fine self.

We’re revamping the Canberra IA Community blog - and we want to use it to grow the community. What do we have planned? Some of the things are:

  • Advertising meetings on the blog,
  • Doing follow-up meeting reports,
  • Encourage presenters to put their presentations up on the blog,
  • Publishing events on upcoming and/or meetup and cross-referencing them to the blog,
  • Promoting the blog via the mailing list and vice versa, and
  • Eventually, handle everything via the blog and kill off the mailing list.

Is there anything we’ve missed? If so, please let me know. I’ll publish an update here in a couple of months.

The cross-link-love to our blogs is a great idea.

Maybe we can encourage some guest blogging for those who don’t have their own blogs and want to contribute?

    Hi Matt,

    thank you for your comment.

I like the idea of us all guest-blogging on iacanberra.org and one another’s blogs.

Something to discuss at the next IA Cocktail Hour - self-referentially, we might even run through the IA blogosphere :)
    Cheers, Andrew
