Two of my favourite blogs have been running “series” posts:
- Social Media Systems’ Israeli Rothman has updated and re-released a ten part series on integrated marketing systems.
- Darren Rowse from Problogger has an excellent series on Rediscovering your blogging groove. It runs through a blog course in minature - and if you followed the Zen Habits example, you could use the blogging groove exercises as a daily posting routine.
I like series, especially when I can get into them, as I did for Jeri Merrell’s series on Project Management for small business.
The value of series
What is the value of a series of posts? I can think of several:
- Like a soap opera, the viewer (reader) wants to come back to find out what happens next.
- You can explore a theme or topic in greater depth.
- It is easier to write a series for scheduled release over a number of days.
- The series could end up as a chapter (or outline!) for a longer book or white paper.
- They are easy to link to, especially if you write something of real value.
How do you write a series?
Easy - pick a theme that suits your blog niche and write a series of related articles on it, concentrating on building up a complete picture of the theme. Don’t forget to add value to your niche by making every series post a pillar post. Mix it up a little and address the subject matter from different angles.
Good luck with it. Write a series and mention this article - in return, I will review your series here.
