Married to the Blog?

In Married to the Mob, Michelle Pfeiffer eventually moans “I want a divorce!”. While the movie was a comedy, it makes me think about my own situation and that of the bloggers I know personally.

Without going into specifics, or naming names, it is fair to say that intense blogging puts a strain on any relationship.  Between afterwork and blogging I get no small amount of grief from my partner, and I know that others get the same reaction. It is hard to avoid thinking about this sort of thing - is the discord a symptom of deeper problems or is blogging the root cause?

What does it mean, to be married to your blog?  Is it possible to have a meaningful long-term relationship AND a successful blog? Is discord over time spend blogging the symptom or the condition?

Please let me know what you think - I think that we need to be able to talk about this sort of thing as bloggers.

I guess the same goes for most things in life, you just have to manage your time well and set schedules and some limits to live by.

    Hi Cameron,

I agree - setting goals and sticking to limits are really important. In a strange twist of fate, my partner Helen and I are fairly close to announcing our engagement publicly - and she has come to accept my blogging as part of our life together (a major shift).

Two months ago, when I wrote this post, I wouldn’t have thought that things would have turned out this way.

PS: just visited your site - it still has a bit of a way to go - what trade are you in?

    Cheers, Andrew
