Getting a post a day out

Posting once a day - especially when you’re getting started - works out better some days than others.

The biggest single blogging secret I’ve learnt this week is to schedule my posts - the theory is this: when I get a couple of hours free, I’ll put together a set of pillar posts for the coming few days, and schedule them to appear once a day or so.

There are WordPress plugins available to help, but you don’t need them. Here’s how I do it:

  1. Write the post whenever you get time. I’m writing this post on a Sunday afternoon and scheduling it to publish on the following Thursday.
  2. Schedule it. This is easy in WordPress - just check the “edit timestamp” box and edit the post timestamp for when you want it to appear on your blog. Remember that this time is the one you have WordPress set to - and it may or may not be the same as your local time, which may not be the same as your hosting server time. Don’t confuse the three if an exact time is important to you.

I run HumaneIA using MovableType 4 beta - and the procedure is the same, with one addition: to edit the timestamp, you need to click on View Options and check Publishing. The timestamp block then becomes visible, and you can put in any time you like (and be sure to change the post status to Scheduled).
